President's Meeting 2013

Surgical Outcomes

Recognising its increasing significance since the launch of revalidation, 'Surgical Outcomes' was the topic for The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's President's Meeting, held at the College on Friday 8 March 2013.

The conference programme included a comprehensive overview of the key issues surrounding surgical outcomes. Key speakers included Dr John Birkmeyer from the University of Michigan (pictured left with RCSEd President Mr Ian Ritchie) who delivered the Lister Legacy Lecture, in which he explored variation in surgical outcomes and its underlying causes and also spoke on new models for collaborative quality improvement in surgical care. Other lectures included measurement of surgical outcomes, the reliability of routine collected data, strategies for improving surgical care and the debate over centralisation of high risk surgical services.

The President's Meeting 2013 was dovetailed with RCSEd's Annual Audit Symposium which ran in parallel with Specialty Outcomes Symposia with contributions from all the Specialty Associations. The Trainees' Audit Symposium ran in parallel with the specialty sessions and all trainees had the opportunity to attend the plenary sessions. The Surgeon-in-Training Medal for best presentation in the Audit Symposium was presented at the end of the meeting the end of the meeting to Mr James Bowness.

There was also a new Lister Legacy Prize for the best presentation related to the work of Lord Lister on 'sepsis and infection control'. This was won by Mr Sonpreet Rai. The prize was sponsored by Johnson and Johnson Medical Companies, who also sponsored the Student Surgical Skills Competition.
