Membership Categories

Fellowship or membership of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is usually by examination, which are held throughout the UK and overseas. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has a membership category for you at all stages of your medical or dental training, from your first year at university to your retirement! Below is a brief description of each category.

Becoming an RCSEd Fellow

To become a Fellow of the College you need to have either:

  • Passed one of the College's Joint Specialty Fellowship Examinations (collegiate examinations in the recognised specialties and held in various venues and countries around the globe).
  • Passed the exit examination in your chosen specialty (examinations conducted by the Intercollegiate Specialty Board or other sister Colleges).
  • Passed the fellowship examination of the College in your chosen specialty (although these exams have now been phased out the College will accept a candidate for fellowship who has been successful in these exams in the past).
  • Held specialty dental membership qualifications from a Royal College for at least five years to apply for the Fellowship in Dental Surgery without examination.

Success in any of the above means you are eligible for election to fellowship of the College. You will be sent the relevant paperwork for completion and return so that your name can be presented at a meeting of the Council of the College.

Becoming an RCSEd Member

To become a Member of the College you need to have either:

  • Passed the intercollegiate membership examination.
  • Passed the intercollegiate membership examination of one of the sister surgical Colleges in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
  • Passed the membership examination of the College in your chosen specialty (although these exams have now been phased out the College will accept a candidate for membership who has been successful in these exams in the past).

Success in any of the above examinations means you are eligible for election to membership of the College. You will be sent the relevant paperwork for completion and return so that your name can be presented at a meeting of the Council of the College.

Becoming an RCSEd Associate

Associate membership of the College is offered to those candidates successful in collegiate diploma examinations which do not lead to election to fellowship or membership.

Becoming an RCSEd Affiliate

Affiliate membership of the College is open to medical undergraduates, foundation doctors and pre-MRCS surgical trainees. We also have a Dental Affiliate Network.
